Steve Alten writes terrific thrillers, many involving giant underwater beasts. MEG and The Loch are a couple of personal favorites. So I’m thrilled to have received this blurb from him today.

"Another gripping tale by author Henry Perez. In Mourn the Living, Perez once again proves that our most terrifying monsters are the ones who live among us."

Anne Perry is a master mystery author whose body of work (more than 50 novels) ranks her among the giants of the genre. She made my day when wrote this about Mourn the Living:

Mourn the Living is an exciting, and well-written novel! It is a welcome follow-up to Henry Perez's deservedly successful debut.”

Anyone who enjoys crime fiction has either read Tess Gerritsen, is planning to read one of her bestsellers, or should be. This is what she wrote about Mourn the Living.

"A compelling new sleuth is on the scene: reporter Alex Chapa, who's as dogged and daring as any you'll find in today's crime fiction.  Henry Perez writes with a journalist's keen eye for detail, and a thriller writer's instinct for surprising plot twists."

David Ellis made a splash with his debut mystery Line of Vision, which won the Edgar for Best First Mystery. He has followed that up with a string of gripping and original novels including the brilliant In the Company of Liars and his latest The Hidden Man. Mourn the Living has received this wonderful blurb from David.

“Whenever you read a debut novel as sensational as Killing Red, you ask yourself—Is the author a one-hit wonder or can he consistently produce top-flight novels?  Perez answers this question resoundingly with a follow-up that tops his first. Mourn the Living has the pace, intensity, and heart of a classic thriller.  I would read anything this author writes.”

Andrew Grant
’s debut, Even, received a great deal of well-deserved attention last year. I’m thrilled that Andrew has written this generous recommendation for Mourn the Living.

"Perez skillfully grafts a compelling human face onto the cruel, dark heart of this meticulously plotted and complex thriller."

Blake Crouch has been thrilling and scaring readers since Desert Places introduced usto a very nasty and truly original villain. He is widely admired for his intricate plots and multi-dimensional characters. Here’s what Blake has to say about Mourn the Living.

"Mourn the Living is a thrilling and beautifully-crafted piece of crime fiction, and Perez's creation, newspaperman Alex Chapa, is not only a true original but a rarity, a man whose toughness and sensitivity combine to make a thoroughly human, utterly believable hero. If you liked "The Wire," you're going to love this."

Several years ago, I spent a day reading Gun Monkeys, a masterful debut that reminded me of how good the tough guy crime novel could be. Last year I read a thoroughly original and entertaining post-apocalyptic thriller titled Whiskey Girls a Go-Go. Both were written by Victor Gischler, one of our most gifted and versatile authors. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to receive this—

"With a seemingly effortless manipulation of laser sharp prose, Henry Perez juggles plot, character and suspense with the smooth skill of a seasoned veteran.  Hard to believe this is only his second novel."

Sean Chercover is part of a new wave Chicago based crime writers whose storytelling skills have generated a a lot of attention. His debut, Big City, Bad Blood, earned him a great deal of praise as well as an award or two. He then topped it with his second Ray Dudgeon mystery, Trigger City. Here's what Sean had to say about Killing Red

Henry Perez has crafted an astonishing debut thriller that showcases both his reporter’s eye for detail and some serious writing chops.  Fasten your seatbelt and prepare for a sleepless night. Once you pick up Killing Red, you won't put it down.”

Another blurb. This comes from one of the most popular authors around. Very generous, and very cool.

“Fascinating!  Dark and disturbing, Killing Red is not for the faint of heart.  It kept me turning pages long into the night.”

Lisa Jackson, New York Times bestselling author

A cool new blurb today from a terrific writer.

Killing Red is an intense, smart read, and Alex Chapa is a character of flesh and blood.  A terrific debut—bravo!”

Marcus Sakey, award winning author of Good People, At the City's Edge, and The Blade Itself

Killing Red just received this incredible blurb from bestselling author Jay Bonansinga.

Killing Red heralds a meteoric debut!

Compulsively readable, crafted with surgical skill, Henry Perez’s first novel tells a decade-spanning story of how evil can plant its seeds in the most mundane of all places and then spread like kudzu.

Not since Thomas Harris burst onto the scene with Black Sunday has a debut thriller come along that sinks its hooks this deep into a reader from page one.  Here’s a public service message to all thriller lovers:  Do not start this book at night if you want to get any sleep, because you will be up until you cross the finish line – pulse racing, skin sweaty – but happy as hell you decided to go on this magnificent thrill ride.

Highest recommendation!”

Jay Bonansinga, national bestselling author of Perfect Victim, Shattered, Twisted, and Frozen

Also, recently Tom Schreck, author of On the Ropes and TKO posting on the blog Inkspot wrote the following:

“Henry Perez's book Killing Red will be the book everyone is talking about next spring.”
